About These Projects

There are a couple of projects I have participated in and here are some highlights. Some of them are still in development and others have been put on the backburner for the time being. If you see something you like or have a general question about one of the projects or websites shown here, please feel free to contact me.

WorldMinder

In the spring of 2009, I was part of a small group of students who were assigned to make an application to visualize world data to improve our social awareness about the world. Inspired by Hans Roslings GapMinder project we (Marijn de Vries Hoogerwerff, Lisa Ing and Gina Doekhie) decided to enhance the visualization of GapMinder in a more geographical and comparative way.

Leading the group through a two month preparation period and forced to learn AS3, jQuery and other programming languages from scratch, the final result was completed within four weeks. We presented our findings at the Visualizing Our World of Data conference in Amsterdam. Our project was extremely well received and discussions led to future implementations of the application.

Although plans are still alive to continue development of the application, current academic obligations keep us from doing so. However, the alpha version of the application is still live and can be viewed on WorldMinder.org.

Here are some screen shots of the application in question.

WorldMinder Dashboard

This dashboard shows the map, scatter plot, bargraph, and country list in one view, all interactive, all based on the same data.

WorldMinder Map

This map view of the world shows the infant mortality rate per country, with color indication which countries are above or below average.

WorldMinder Bubble Graph

This bubble graph, inspired by GapMinder, shows the infant mortality rate and life expectancy at birth, with the bubble size symbolizing the population size.

WorldMinder Direct Compare Graph

This chart will summarize selected countries and make an easy comparison between nations, showing in detail which country has a higher mortality rate.

Camp Charles Pearlstein

This year Camp Charles Pearlstein, located in Prescott, Arizona, requested a new and fully manageable website that is able to automate the annual processes of recruitment and sign ups. While the website relies on a Typo3 CMS, further implementations of extensions and customized features have made the website into a managing system for a lot of processes that are currently still managed by hand. Sign up forms are mostly automated and through different user-guided sections, people are pointed towards the right forms and documents needed to create a smoother registration process.

Content Section of the Camp Pearlstein Website

Since the website is still under development this is just a snapshot from the process we're making.

CCP Backend

This website has been developed on top of the TYPO3 CMS as well for maximum customization.
